Özcan Ertek — Devil's Rope: On a Journey of No Return

Free Projects

Some snippets from the sound intervention "Devil's Rope: On a Journey of No Return" last July 2023 at the historical Steinhaus at Hardenbergstraße 33. Reflecting on the venue's rich history, war damage and then subsequent restoration set the stage for the exploration of the space by interacting with the resonant frequencies of the wire and playing with the reverberation of the space. Sculpting a sonic barrier and sound wall that enveloped the audience.

For over a century, barbed wire has been utilized extensively to demarcate territorial boundaries and define spaces, shaping identities. Thanks to its success in deterring human bodies, it has become an emblem of border(ing). „Devil‘s Rope“ employs barbed wire as a medium to contemplate the concept of borders and the intricacies of human mobility. It calls for a reflection on the interplay between the body, borders, sound, and space, highlighting the multifaceted nature of these issues.

  • Devil’s Rope has been shown in a different forms in and outside of Berlin, new experiments/ documentations on the way.
