Mirror: Material, Metaphor, Medium — Summer 2018
self-reflective mirror is an installation that seeks to display the constant cycle of self-recognition, self-reflection and self-transformation.
Mirrors constantly reflect the world around them. We perceive ourself in the mirror and reflect about ourself. What if the mirror was also able to recognize its own reflection and think about it? Reflecting about ourself leads to a self-transformation according to an ideal we have in mind. What if the mirror was able to transform itself based on his reflection?
self-reflective mirror is able to look at itself by facing its other part. After recognizing itself the mirror reflects about itself. It then transforms itself by heating gallium which is the reflective material of the mirror. The gallium liquifies and drips onto its counter part where it solidifies again. Then the process starts again on the other part. Thus both mirrors of the installation are constantly changing their own form and manipulating the other.
self-reflective mirror experiences the same constant cycle of self-recognition, self-reflection and self-transformation as we do. Gallium which is part of most electronic devices is not only the material the mirrors are made of but also refers to the inner life of a machine thus symbolising a possible self-reflection of machines as well.
