Almost all cities in Korea as Seoul are new and show no signs of war. Nevertheless, Korea is actually just in the ceasefire. In Germany contrastively, many old buildings have been restored or rebuilt. Especially in Berlin there are many new monuments that make the city’s history readable. It is astonishing to me to discover bullet holes of old buildings, because you do not know such a physical proximity of the war in Korea. It is not a coincidence that we see this mark on the city. It must be a conscious approach to history. The war came closer to me here than in Korea, where one learns the war as abstract knowledge from the textbook. Then I connect the bullet holes with the term “phantom limb”. The bullet holes can be the medium to bring the wounds of war into consciousness - even for the people born later.
