Tristan Wheeler — Durations of Fauna
Potential Energy — Energy Potential — Winter 2025
At the scale of habitats and landscapes, individual animals often vanish from view. Durations of Fauna moves beyond individual bodies to consider animal presence as something distributed throughout the landscape, translating animal location data into an evolving visual terrain.
This iteration draws on data from Movebank, an open platform for sharing animal tracking data, documenting the movements of four fruit-eating mammal species on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Across multiple timescales, traces of their movements accumulate, overlap, and thicken, forming layered patterns of activity and interaction.
Within this terrain, structures in the tracking data modulate the spatial frequency and rate of change of animated noise fields. Through the perceptual phenomenon of 'motion-defined form', shifting relationships between these patterns give rise to forms that exist only in time.
