Micro/Macro (Course) — Summer 2020
This short experimental video consists of performative manipulations in web conferencing systems such as BigBlueButton and FaceTime—Under COVID-19, the SoSe2020 in Berlin University of the Arts(UdK) took place on BigBlueButton.
In the sense that it is an intermediary between scattered individuals, the digital ‘windows(窓)’ such as BigBlueBotton and FaceTime can be called ‘間’, meaning ‘between’, itself. Its somewhat abstract concept perhaps signifies all material and immaterial things that exist in between scattered things. In a digital ‘window(窓)’ where space is replaced by the web, it can be connected infinitely from '間' to '間'. The digital environment is the 'between-windows(窓-間) as such.
Yi Sang's Poem 'Mirror'(1933), quoted in the video, utilises a stream-of-consciousness technique to experiment interiority, separation from inside one's self as well as the outer world. It evinces the desolate internal landscape of modern humanity, which is fragmented and, therefore, anxious and fearful.
The 'Mirror' modified to 'Kan(間)' is read by the artificial production of human speech, which can be produced with only about 40 minutes of voice recording. Today, no one sings a poem, but a digital minstrel, who is created by concatenating pieces of recorded speech that are stored in a database, is singing and reciting while wandering 'between-windows(窓-間)'.
Perhaps humans flowing as digital signals are more sensational and hysterical in a more sophisticated synthesised form than the fragmented modern man described by Yi Sang. Also, with a somewhat narcissistic attitude, they keep their mind on taking selfies, trying to connect only to things that suit their preference.
