Dawoon Park — Buddha of Capitalism
Media Minimalism — Winter 2019
Buddha is not a god or truth, but a medium for delivering Buddhism to living beings and removing their suffering. Humans are neither god nor truth, but a medium for delivering capitalism to living beings, making them suffer whilst suffering from it.
The waves in the Yugi(鍮器) are connected to an American stock market index. If the market moves, the water starts moving. If the trading stops, the water stands still.
In buddhist meditation, the calm sea is like a calm mind. The stormy sea is a mind in turmoil. When the sea is calm one can see through it, but in its rough state, nothing on the surface can be seen.
The Mantra of Light is placed at the highest point in the house in the sense that the Buddha's teaching illuminates all living things.
Can the waves mirror the Buddha's teachings above it? Can we reach nirvana under capitalism?
